A Recycled Glass Greenhouse

By Carolyn Green
This greenhouse, completed in the spring of 1997 was built using all recycled glass. The glass, which otherwise would have been discarded, was obtained from a university residence and from a high rise apartment, both being retrofitted with new windows. The roof uses two rows of 14" x 60" tempered patio glass doors. The sides use 32" x 34" sashes from sliders and the front uses sashes from old double hung windows. The south facing front wall is sloped at about 78 degrees. The structure consists of 12.5' x 26' concrete block foundation, 4" x 4" posts and a truss roof, all sized to fit the recycled windows. The trusses were home made from 2 x 4s and recycled plywood.

The high ceiling of the greenhouse makes it a pleasure to work in and its attractive front with the old sashes has enhanced the appearance of the old metal barn.
