About Solar Nova Scotia

» Our Goals » What We Do

Solar Nova Scotia is an affiliate member of the Solar Energy Society of Canada Inc. (SESCI), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to energy conservation and the use of renewable forms of energy.

Conventional forms of energy are major contributors of the pollutants that cause environmental degradation such as acid rain and global warming. However, current energy policies and pricing do not reflect these costs. If they did, renewable energy would be competitive.

Solar Nova Scotia promotes an accelerated move to a 'soft energy path,' incorporating energy conservation and all forms of renewable energy: passive and active solar, photovoltaics, wind, biomass, geothermal. We believe that these technologies are the key to a sustainable future, both regionally and globally.

Our Goals:

  • To promote energy conservation and the use of renewable energy in Atlantic Canada.

  • To encourage all levels of government to give high priority to energy conservation and renewable energy when developing and carrying out energy policies.

  • To promote introduction of 'Full Cost' energy pricing, so that all energy forms reflect true societal and environmental costs.

  • To provide the public with up-to-date and reliable information on all forms of renewable energy so that they can incorporate them in their own lifestyles, today.

What Do We Do?

Solar Nova Scotia sponsors the Solar Shelter Workshop, an introduction to solar principles and the design and construction of affordable solar shelter. We encourage the teaching of renewable energy strategies in schools by promoting solar energy projects in Regional Science Fairs and organizing high school competitions in developing practical renewable energy projects.

Solar Nova Scotia participates in workshops, conferences, green fairs and seminars dealing with energy and the environment by providing information on conservation and alternate energy to professionals and the public.

We are producing resource material on solar technology to make it understandable and available to the public.
